Today’s microgrid control solutions are faced with a challenge of controlling an ever-increasing number of DERs which individual actions needs to be tightly harmonized in order to achieve the desired operational goals and ensure stable system operation under all conditions. At the same time, such solutions should be easy to configure and commission. HIL validation platform able to provide detailed DER models and realistic fieldbus interfaces at a large-scale can play an important role in rapid deployment of such control solutions.

The two most challenging Hardware in the Loop (HIL) testing applications in the Electric Vehicle (EV) domain are motor drives and battery chargers. Developing and testing control software for these power converters are challenging due to: high switching frequency, new wide-bandgap semiconductors, highly nonlinear motors, new topologies, and their safety critical role. In this webinar, learn why it is necessary to use high-fidelity plant models able to capture all the relevant real-world phenomena in order to conduct comprehensive HIL testing of EV power electronics controllers under all the operating conditions, including faults.

Starting from an IEEE 4-node test feeder, we will build, test, and demonstrate a simple microgrid model consisting of an energy storage module (ESM), a photovoltaic (PV) power source, natural gas genset, variable load with load profile, and other components. Protection will also be discussed. A simple microgrid controller monitors the system, ensuring grid-tied/islanding operation, and other system-level functions. A test framework (Typhoon Test IDE) is shown as an effective tool for simple and scalable functional testing of DER and system-wide behavior.
