Overview

Watch the recorded webinar on Microgrid HIL Testbed with Woodward easYgen controller-in-the-loop! During this Microgrid Controller Hardware in the loop (C-HIL) webinar, we demonstrated the use of a Woodward easYgen 3500XT genset controller together with LS5 remote breaker operator, in the loop with Typhoon HIL 604 real time emulator.

The demo is based on a typical microgrid comprising: a detailed model of a diesel genset which is controlled by the easYgen, an energy storage inverter with an emulated controller, relays and breakers, some operated remotely by LS5, and transmission lines and electrical loads. We examine the most important control modes of the Woodward easYgen including frequency control, load control, and breaker management. We also show how remote breaker operator LS5 can enhance microgrid functionality; finally, we demonstrate how energy storage inverter can enhance genset operation especially during load swing and fault events.

The webinar was be lead by Edwin Fonkwe, Power Electronics/Applications Engineer Typhoon HIL, and our key speaker was Clemens Grosskinsky, Business Development Manager supported by Bill Becker, Sales Manager for Power Generation and Distribution from Woodward Inc.

Edwin Fonkwe received his DiplĂŽme d’IngĂ©nieur de Conception from the Ecole Nationale SupĂ©rieure Polytechnique YaoundĂ© in 2009 with a specialty in Electrical Engineering. He received an MSc degree in Electrical Power Engineering at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in 2013, and a Master of Science (SM) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015, where he is currently working toward his PhD. His research interests include power electronics, control, modeling and simulation. Since March 2015 Edwin is part of the team at Typhoon HIL where his work includes developing high fidelity microgrid testbed models for real time simulation.

Clemens Grosskinsky gained his engineering degree from University of Applied Sciences in Esslingen, Germany. His professional career started at Azubi, Heidelberg, and from 2002 Clemens started working at Woodward. The main issues that come to his everyday business are related to Power Generation & Distribution, Gas & Diesel engines, bifuel, dual fuel, ECU, AVR, excitation systems, speed governors, synchronization, paralleling, blackstart, common control, control, protection, generators & electrical drives, grid codes, etc.

Bill Becker is a veteran of renewable energy and microgrid control technologies and passionate about the renewable revolution embracing our country and world. His career started in engineering (control systems for gas turbines) and moved into engineering management and then into the commercial world. The past twenty years Bill’s focus was on product line management, business development and sales beginning in turbine controls and moving into renewable energy and microgrids.

Attendees will learn about:

  • The build of demo microgrid example
  • The most important control modes of the Woodward easYgen including frequency control, load control, and breaker management
  • How the remote breaker operator LS5 can enhance microgrid functionality
  • How the energy storage inverter can enhance genset operation especially during load swing and fault events
